Cyprus is launching the Home Energy Drive scheme in an already somewhat desperate attempt to meet EU energy-efficiency standards, as the deadline approaches. Although the date is set in 2030, which may seem like a long way ahead, Cyprus does have to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40%, increasing energy efficiency by at least 32.5%, and that’s not an easy target to achieve.
At an online conference earlier this week, Energy Minister - Natasa Pilides announced plans to subsidise home upgrading projects with €30 million in 2021 and €70 million over a seven-year period 2027. In the first phase, €30 million will be allocated to cover the purchase and installation of materials and equipment for energy efficiency. An additional €7-8 million a year will be distributed as grants to people who want to upgrade their energy infrastructure.
The plan is directed at permanent Cyprus resident homeowners, and only one grant may be applied per building.
Applications for the schemes will be provided on a new online platform (to be launched).
