The Benefits of Cyprus Reunification Should not be Underestimated

The Benefits of Cyprus ReunificationWith reunification of Cyprus a major impediment to external investment funds entering Cyprus would be removed as the political uncertainty of a divided island, which is a deterrent to some investors would be considerably diminished. In-coming investment would enable development of the island and the necessary additional infrastructure, which the banking system currently lacks the liquidity to facilitate, by funding the development of important regional services in the fields of education, sports tourism and medical services, as well as tourism based around the cruise industry and as a global shipping and distribution hub in the region. Cyprus could attract business from both east and west because of its strategic geographical position and membership of the European Union (E.U.) plus the friendly relationships it maintains within the E.U., the Middle East and Russia. The importance of an agreement and the benefits being fully inclusive of all Cypriot communities and the many ex-patriot citizens now resident on the island for many years is of prime concern. Some of this group have acquired Cyprus citizenship via the government’s investment citizenship scheme.

Reunification talks between President Anastasiades and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Akinci are due to reconvene on Tuesday 1st September 2015 when the contentious issue of property is likely to be a main focus. This meeting will be preceded by meetings with the United Nations Special Advisor Espen Barth Eide. In July before the summer recess the two leaders agreed on respecting the rights of both the users and owners of properties and to the setting up of a property commission to deliberate on whether the property might be subject to exchange, compensation or return to the original owner.

Government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said that this was an important issue which also impinges on other aspects of the Cyprus Problem such as Turkish settlers, territory and the economy. Although the July agreement had been criticised from both sides, the spokesman discounted such criticism saying that the agreement would operate strictly within the agreed terms of reference.
