Anyone who fancies taking part in a triathlon will just about have time to fit in some serious training ahead of the first Cyprus triathlon of the 2016 season on Sunday April 3rd at the Nissi Beach Resort in Ayia Napa. Triathlon, where the athletes take on the three disciplines of swimming, cycling and running, and transition from one to the other without a break, is gaining in popularity, and is a great spectator sport. The event, which is running for the third year, attracts international and national competitors, and is sponsored by Hellenic Bank and organised by the Nicosia based Nireas Triathlon Club. So far participants for 2016 event include entries from Germany, Lithuania, the Russian Federation and the United Kingdom (UK). There are two options available in Ayia Napa, Sprint Triathlon (750m swim – 20km cycle – 5km run), and Triathlon (1500m swim – 40km cycle – 10km run). The participation of teams of two or three athletes is included this year, which gives those new to the sport a chance to partner with others in a multi discipline event.
The event director of Nireas Triathlon, Mr Panagiotis Ntais, expressed the opinion that joining a club and being coached in all three disciplines is the best way for beginners to proceed, and that his club welcomes new members.
On Sunday 24th April 2016, Paphos will be staging the only Sprint and Olympic Triathlon on the western side of the island at the Municipal Baths in the tourist area of Paphos. The traffic free, flat cycling route and scenic running course make this a favourite with participants. Following on from this on Sunday 15th May 2016, the Cyprus Triathlon Federation Triathlon Championships will be held in Larnaca at Finikoudes on the sea front. Only members of a triathlon club which is registered with the federation will be eligible to apply.
For those serious in their triathlon ambitions, a triathlon camp holiday is on offer at the Almira Resort in the Paphos district with six days of coaching and training and the relaxing ambience of the resort in which to recuperate.
