Cyprus has long been a favourite holiday destination for British people stemming, at least in part, from the fact that the island was once a British colony, and the United Kingdom (U.K.) has important military bases on the island. In addition there is a large Cypriot diaspora, with the majority living in the U.K. and naturally they pay regular visits to Cyprus to see family and friends. When combined with the legendary hospitality of the Cypriot people, and the fact that 75% of Cypriots speak English, it is hardly surprising that the British feel so at home in Cyprus and many have bought holiday homes or have their primary residence on the island. An estimated 59,000 British people currently live in Cyprus with retirees making up the biggest proportion. Now owing to the strength of the pound against the Euro, a sterling pound today will buy around 10% more in currency than a year ago, and therefore the exchange rate gives great value for money when it comes to holidaying in Cyprus and also making this a good time for property investment.
Package holiday costs in Cyprus also represent great value with a winter sunshine break in Paphos being offered for £239 for a 7 night stay, including dinner, according to researchers. Annita Demetriades speaking as Deputy Director of the Cyprus Tourist Organisation, commented on the record arrivals for 2015 as being a very successful year for tourism overall, especially during the peak summer months, and with plenty of scope to make Cyprus a year round holiday destination by working to increase tourism during the winter.
The recent launch of a new Cyprus based start-up airline named TUS Airways could help boost visitor numbers further as well as facilitate business travel in the region. Its Saab 340B turbo prop aircraft seating 30 passengers will fly charter flights out of Larnaca and Paphos airports. Destinations include Eilat, Haifa, Karpathos, Kos, Samos, Tel Aviv and Heraklion starting from the middle of January 2016.
