An unusual mosaic had been discovered in Larnaca, SigmaLive was told by the curator of the Antiquities Department, Yiorgos Filotheou on Monday.
The mosaic dates back to the Roman period, seems to be representing the accomplishments of Hercules and is said to be one of the most significant findings in Larnaca.
Furthermore, Mr. Yiorgos Filotheou also mentioned that the mosaic is in very good condition and the process is being carried out very carefully as the finding is on a main road of the city.
The Larnaca Sewage Board staff discovered the work while they were opening a canal for the waste to pass. Thus, after the discovery of the mosaic, the sewage board of the city has stopped works in the area.
The road has also been sealed off from traffic, SigmaLive was told by the Antiquities department.
Mr. Filotheou also noted that the excavation was extremely difficult due to the road passing over the site and the buildings surrounding the area.
An online petition has been made by a group of people since the discovery of the mosaic requesting the Larnaca municipality and the Antiquities department to provide information on all archaeological sites in the city. The petition also mentions that the public should be informed about the archaeological works at the ancient port at Kiti.
According to the latest information SigmaLive has learnt, the municipality of Larnaca, the Sewage Board, and the Antiquities department are set to meet at the end of the week for further discussion.
