a better future
Following a similar meeting with officials in Pafos, President Anastasiades recently met with Nicosia Municipalities Mayors, local Members of Parliament and community leaders to launch a number of projects aimed at boosting economic activity in the capital. The intention of the projects announced includes increasing economic growth, improvement in the quality of life for residents and the creation of more jobs. One requirement for project selection is that it should have already received the relevant licensing thus allowing the tendering process to start without delay. In a boost to its green credentials, a Nicosia cycling network is to be created with budget of €5.9 million and the city’s Public Modern Arts Gallery is to be restored along with the old Municipal Theatre which will likely be of interest not only local people but also to the many tourists visiting the city. Work on the improvement programme should start by the end of this year.
Various major roadworks will form part of the project. Makarios and Kallipoleos Avenues are to be reconstructed and will become one-way streets.
The commercial streets of Markariou Evagorou and Stasikratous will be reconstructed at an expected cost of €28.8 million. Parking capacity in the city will be boosted by the construction of an underground car park costing €10 million along with the reconstruction of Omirou Avenue and Stasinou Avenue. Two old government buildings are to be restored, namely the Ministry of the Interior and the old Secretariat building. Furthermore, €0.5 million will go towards visual improvements in the area surrounding the Pancyprian Gymnastic Association Stadium.
A boom in businesses in old town Nicosia promoted by the Municipality has also brought an increase in economic activity to a previously neglect area of the city. This has proven popular with customers, becoming a place to socialise, with many bars and restaurants opening. In addition the Famagusta Gate Cultural Centre as well as hosting art exhibitions, is now also rented as a venue for weddings and Christenings, all adding to the vibrancy of the area with its wonderful old Venetian walls. In the event of a settlement of the Cyprus Problem, Nicosia is likely to experience further growth and development.
