New Tourism Initiatives in Paphos

New Tourism Initiatives in PaphosThe regional Paphos Tourist Board is pressing to establish direct flights to Israel from Paphos Airport in view of the ever increasing numbers of Israelis who visit the district. There has been a 43% increase during 2015 compared to the 2014 season, with numbers of arrivals swelling to 98,000, which gives Israel 6th place in the overall rankings. Advance bookings for the current season are so far showing an upward trend. Paphos is a very popular wedding destination for Israeli couples in this developing market and offers very attractive wedding venues. Board representatives are currently exhibiting in Tel Aviv in a bid to expand their share of the market and attract tourists to enjoy the unique experiences available in the Paphos area, which includes many cultural tourism sites. Paphos has already been selected as Capital of Culture for 2017. Paphos is also now a partner in the Culture and Heritage for Responsible, Innovative and Sustainable Tourism Actions (CHRISTA), which is a European initiative aimed at the protection and preservation of natural and heritage sites and the implementation of agreed tourism protocols.

In addition, since 2012, Paphos has also played an important role in the Brussels based European Cultural Tourism Network (ECTN).

In a further promotion for the area, over one hundred Ukrainian travel agents have been invited to attend a three day workshop giving them an opportunity to learn first-hand what Paphos has to offer as a destination. Ukrainian tour companies in conjunction with Attica Holidays Cyprus have organised the event. The workshop which is supported by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) and local hoteliers includes excursions to cultural sites, a “Cyprus Night” and the opportunity to meet and mingle with representatives of the tourism industry, all aimed at increasing incoming tourism and creating awareness of the region as a holiday and business destination. Tourist arrivals from the Ukraine have shown a 23% increase in the 2015 season and it is already considered to be an important market sector.
