New investment in the Larnaca region is in the news yet again with the disclosure by the Minister of Transport that proposals for the development of the old Larnaca Airport site are under consideration, in collaboration with Hermes Airports Limited who is the current airport operative. The company operates under a concession agreement with the Republic of Cyprus with a fifteen year term still to run. According to the minister, the interested parties in the bidding process are from three groups of international entities. The proposals included a combination of shops, a hotel and exhibition space or other such facilities in keeping with the possibilities for this type of building space. Mr Demetriades said that he hoped agreement could be reached for a project that would be of economic help to the local area. He said that negotiations had started and the successful bidders would be selected in the coming months.
On the subject of the delays recently experienced by passengers at Paphos International Airport the Transport Minister commented that measures had been taken in conjunction with the Ministry of Justice to resolve the situation and avoid any further inconvenience to the travelling public. It seems that a trial of increased staffing levels and upgraded software in the area of passport control have alleviated the congestion.
The coastal towns of Larnaca, Paphos and Limassol, all within easy reach of airports, are the most popular tourist destinations in Cyprus with holiday rentals proving to be very popular in these areas and many excellent hotels offering both package deals and individual itineraries. Major infrastructure investments in these centres such as the Limassol Marina, the development of world class golfing resorts and new sports stadia to accommodate the growing sport and athletics tourism, have all contributed to the upgraded tourist offering on the island. Nicosia is also to get a new archaeological museum to be built on the old Nicosia Hospital site. Construction is due to commence in 2018.
