A huge portrait of the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, has been created on a beach in Paphos by an artistic couple from Kissonerga.
Cypriot Painter and Russian sculptor, Katerina Foukara and Arsentiy Lysenkov, who live in Kissonerga, have created the portrait at the beach in front of the Anassa Hotel in Latchi. The huge portrait of Aphrodite has been made of stones by the artists along with other students and art lovers.
"We collected various types of stone from different areas of Paphos. The materials such as stone, water and soil relate to the three elements digging into our primordial feelings. The stone stays constant and unchanged eternally unlike water which constantly moves, and finally the soil, which always works. Land art is art in nature from nature”, commented Katerina Foukara, who along with her husband, sculptor Arsentiy Lysenkov, have an art studio in Kissonerga.
Katherina also pointed out that, in comparison with other materials, stone is a symbol of memories. “We wanted to create something different and chose an interpretation of Aphrodite from the fourth century when she was known as Anassa and was worshiped as goddess of nature”.
The important thing for the artists was to show a natural conciseness through the piece and its beauty at the specific location chosen for the creation of the portrait. Besides, many volunteers and art lovers, visitors and hotel guests helped Katerina and Arsentiy create the work.
“The temporary nature of the piece reminds us that nothing lasts for ever and it will be interesting to see how the work changes face as nature and the elements eat it away,” added Katerina.
