Tourism and sustainability in Cyprus go hand in hand. The island welcomes 2.4 million visitors each year, a figure widely expected to increase in 2016, making tourism an important contributor to the economy and sustainability ever more important in preserving the character and many ancient sites of the island. The Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) has put in place measures to require all hotels of three stars level and above, as well as hotel apartments and tourist villages to comply with sustainability goals, as well as the usual quality qualifications. This gives Cyprus a world first as the only country to introduce sustainability standards on accommodation. They have to report on such things as employment conditions, water and energy usage and the amount of local food they use in their business. Another factor taken into consideration is the degree to which locally based services are employed, as opposed to using services originating from abroad. In addition, the measures they employ to inform guests of how to be more mindful of sustainability issues will also count, over and above the usual exhortations not to change bath towels so frequently.
In 2010 a partnership between the CTO, the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI), along with the United Kingdom based Travel Foundation joined forces to promote Cyprus as a leader in sustainable tourism over the long term in areas such as environmental impact, management of precious water resources, and dependence on finite resources. Their efforts have been recognised with a Silver Award for 2015 from the World Responsible Tourism™ (WRT) London.
As part of the sustainability theme a new initiative entitled Cyprus Breakfast has emerged to promote Cypriot gastronomy and traditional foods on the breakfast table of the twenty one participating hotels. Guests can partake of all the delicious elements that make up the healthy Mediterranean diet that are readily available in Cyprus.
The greening of the Cyprus beach environment is another important aspect of sustainability that is receiving attention. The implementation of an action plan for improvements of maritime and coastal tourism is underway to fulfil demand for waterfront living which is increasing apace, whilst preserving the environment.
