Bi-communal Media Initiative Wins Praise

Bi-communal Media Initiative Wins PraiseIn a move to promote unity, understanding and cooperation between the Greek and Turkish communities in Cyprus, two media houses have joined forces to publish a nationwide English language newspaper, including print and online versions, to cover the news in all areas of the country. They are the Phileleftheros Group and the Turkish Cypriot Havadis Media Group. Management representatives from both companies received a warm welcome from President Anastasiades and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Akinci who welcomed the initiative and supported the vision of one nation being brought closer together by this development. The two leaders expressed their continuing optimism for a resolution of the Cyprus Problem, possibly within 2016, despite the many obstacles that lie ahead.

Mr. Akinci commented that there were five factors at play that were exerting a favourable influence. Firstly, the fact that the two leaders are from the same generation who remember the time when Cyprus was a unified country, and see a possible last opportunity for a federal solution.

Secondly the comprehensive and united support from the various religious leaders representing Armenian, Greek Orthodox, Maronite, Muslim and Roman Catholic faiths, who are actively seeking out ways they can help the process along. The undoubted mutual financial benefit a settlement will bring to both sides is another factor, and also the expected dividend from energy. Israel and Turkey are both thought to be keen to normalise their relations which would facilitate the piping of off-shore gas finds from the Cypriot and Israeli gas fields via Turkey, and onward to Europe via the fastest and most economical route. All these combined with the unprecedented climate of goodwill that exists between the parties are contributing to a general feeling of optimism which is also being voiced by the United Nations.

As the leaders continue to tread the path towards unity they are seeking to establish equality for both communities in a united Cyprus with a single currency. Representatives of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are working behind the scenes on the issue of a common currency which they support in principle.
