2015 Cyprus Wine Competition reflects the quality of Cyprus wines

This year’s annual Cyprus Wine Competition took place over a three day period culminating in an award ceremony on 25th April at the Paticchion Museum in Limassol. The competition was judged by an international panel of experts at the invitation of the Agricultural Ministry. The Cyprus Wine Sector was host to the annual awards ceremony, which had been preceded by a whole month of events. The famous Commandaria Wines took the top prizes with three Grand Gold awards given to St John 1984 Commandaria from the Keo winery, Commandaria Wine Centurian 2000 from Etko Winery and Commandaria Wine Alasia 2004 by Loel Winery. Seven more gold awards were given in the Commandaria category , for the famous desert wine of Cyprus which is exported around the world. It has a history going back 4000 years and there are fourteen villages in the Troodos mountain foothills that make up the appelation of origin zone.

In this the eighth year of the competition, the events and competition were in memory of Akis Zambartas a respected wine maker of the Zambartas Winery in Ayios Ambrosios.

Cyprus Wine CompetitionA total of 139 wine labels took part in the ten categories of the competition attesting to the vibrancy of viticulture in Cyprus. Bronze awards were withheld because of the surfeit of silver awards.

Wine making has been going on in Cyprus for over 5000 years and the island has an excellent climate for it with long hot summers to ripen the grapes. Cyprus has fifty official wineries with many offering tours and wine tastings, but it is as well to telephone in advance to be sure of a warm welcome. The southern slopes of the Troodos mountains above Lemesos (Limassol) is the centre of the wine producing area. It is possible to follow the wine villages routes and visit several wineries in one day, although you might be well advised to take a taxi home.
